Death valley

Over 550 km of sweet road and hot weather. 44 degrees was the hottest day, the temps would reach 36 by 8:30 am each day. Bring lots of water this place is very deceptive and does not offer lots 2nd chances. It was one of the hardest rides I have ever done. I can't wait to go back in 2013. You in ?

Death valley to me is my "Everest" , it's so hot and dry. Each day we would drink around 5- 6 liters of water. We planed the town stops, so that we could take on more ice and water. On day 3 we ran out of water on the last climb out of the valley into Shoshone and were lucky to flag a few cars down for more water. I hit the wall big time on that day, I loved every minute of digging deep.

Some people say that the 508 race or Badwater race is harder, maybe. I have never done them, so I can't really compare the two. They are both hard events, hands down. But, I think heading out into Death valley with no support team by your side 24hrs a day is way harder. No one is there making sure you are on top of your salt pills and talking to you when you have a "low" spells.

If you ever get a chance to go to Death valley, GO !!!! Maybe not on a bike for 4 days and 550 km, but for me it's a little slice of heaven and hell.

Thank you DEATH VALLEY! See you again in 2013
Enjoy the ride !

Thanks Bike Co!

Another great couple of days in the Alpine ! Never pass up a trip into the wilderness. Whistler Bike Co is one of my sponsors over the last couple of years and this year they really came together for me. Thanks crew.
A season end Bike Co trip was organized for the south Chillcotins. A place that I have been coming to for years. I fell in love with the terrain the first time. Go check it out. It's a must.

Thanks again to the Bike Co crew for another great season and fun in the Bike shop !

Always enjoy the alpine !

I have too many stories of this trip full of  laughter and way too many beers. See ya at the 5 peaks !

Ironman & Xterra

"climbing yellow lake"

Well, what a week ! After 2 trips to the ER room. I am ready for a little rest. Ironman did not go as planned. I was feeling great after the swim (1:03) I really didn't push it hard, I just wanted to feel good coming out of the swim. 167 km into the ride the heat was getting up there and I really don't remember much after that. You can read all about the accident here in the Whistler Piques news .

So after that little bit of fun, I wanted to race the Xterra Canadian Championships here in Whistler. Maybe I would get a spot to Worlds Xterra in Kona. Well, I took the advise of my coach " Just go out there and have fun and don't push to hard"
"And their off!"

Another beautiful Sunday for racing, the race went really well for me and I made sure that I didn't push it over my limit. My heart was still beating hard and I never really felt that I was in the " red-zone" . It's sometimes fun to race for fun. I was joking all the way and thanking the vollies who were out there for a very long and hot day.

A big congratulations to Brandi Heisterman, local gal. Who came 2nd in a very strong female field

Best quote of the day was from Brandi " Trail running is so much fun ! I can't believe it "
Here I am finishing up in 27th over in Canadian Championships, not bad after a hell week.
Until next time....enjoy the dirt.

5 peaks Whistler

What a great day to be in the alpine for the 5 peaks in Whistler. Don't ya wish you were there ? Just look at the picks. I didn't race because I am getting ready for Ironman next weekend. Knowing my luck I would have twisted my ankle or something worse. I missed most of the race due to the fact I had to give a trail runner a lift to the Whistler medical clinic for his broken ankle. Poor guy.
Love the kids race always a fun one !

Up next .... Rundle's revenge

Up next on my list of races in the Rundle's Revenge in Canmore. There are many race at this event to enter in. The Full Donkey will be the one for me. It will be a 100 km mtn bike race on the Sat, followed by a 50 km trail run on Sunday. This will be a great training leading up to Ironman. After a very long spring with rain and cold, I have headed south to Utah for some sunshine and training. The weather has been hot and warm and I am loving it !! The Alpine flowers are in full bloom. So sweet !

I hope everyone is getting out there. The weather as been so good down here and I have started swimming in a great outdoor pool. It's a 50 meter pool , so not many flip turns. I have also testing the Suunto T6 with Movescount program that logs all your moves, check it out. More from the pool later

Olympics Vs X games

What is bigger or better ? Olympics or X games ? Seems like X games will be hitting 6 different country for a global tour. Lot of people like the x games for the "cool" factor, but winning an Olympic medal is way harder. The Olympics only hands out medals every 4 years !

You make the call ? Are you an X- games kind of guy or an Olympian ?

The running here in Saskatoon is great ! Right in the heart of the city you can find yourself running on over 20 km of trails. We have been luckly with some warmth of the sun and great food. The runs around the river banks will take you right past JD himself.
If you ever get to "TOON" town check out Brainsport , a great little running shop. Our next stop is Outter Limits on Tuesday at 5:30 pm . Hope to see ya there.
